Court Appointed Special Advocates ® (CASAs) are community volunteers who are trained to act as advocates for abused and neglected children that have been brought into the protective custody of the State of Texas (foster care). CASA volunteer advocates are sworn in by a cluster court associate judge and take an oath to keep the best interests of the child or children they serve as their focus and to maintain confidentiality. CASA South Texas trains and supports advocates to speak up for abused or neglected children in the foster care system in Atascosa, Frio and LaSalle Counties.
With more children coming into care every week, more volunteers are needed to speak up for children in court.
CASA volunteers are people like you. They’re teachers, business people, retirees, stay-at-home moms, grandparents, college students; extraordinary people who want to make certain the voices of abused and neglected children are heard.
It isn’t unusual for a child to be moved repeatedly while in foster care and for lawyers and caseworkers to change. When a child has a CASA volunteer, that person is often the one constant who stays with the children throughout their journeys in the foster care system. The CASA volunteer is often the rock for children as they are thrown into a system that is supposed to protect them.
